Christmas and Easter

Mark 9:9–13

9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean. 11 Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12 He said to them, “Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written about him.”

This is a confusing passage of scripture that raises many questions for even the smartest biblical scholars.  For us, there is an easy question to ask and answer:  “Why is this an appointed reading for the Advent/Christmas season?”  The answer is that Easter was celebrated by the church before Christmas ever was.  Easter is the more important holiday.  Jesus’ resurrection is the greatest gift of God to us.  Jesus was born to live and die for us.  While the Christmas story brings us joy, it is the Easter story that brings eternal joy and life. Trondhjem Men Meet at the Ranchero

Why should the women have all the fun?  The men of Trondhjem have traditionally gathered in December at the Ranchero in Webster for a good time of food, drink and conversation.  This is “our” Christmas party.

The date picked for this year is Thursday, December 8.  We try to meet at the restaurant at 6:00 pm for beverages.  We usually start to eat dinner at about 7 pm.  Drinks and dinner are on your own.

If you can come, please get in touch with Pastor Howard by telephone (952-994-1972) or by email, pastorhoward@means.net.  It would be great to get a good count of how many are coming by the Tuesday just before December 8.

Christmas Thoughts…Really!

Matthew 1:18; 2:1-2

18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

2:1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

I picked these texts as a jumping off point for a few thoughts about Christmas.  They were inspired by a member’s brother-in-law, who is a Russian Orthodox Christian, living in Alaska.  The brother-in-law’s name is Mike.  In Mike’s Christmas letter he spoke of his faith and celebrating Christmas on January 7. Wonderful Counselor

Isaiah 9:6–7

6 For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

This is one of my favorite Christmas readings from scripture.  When the early church looked back in scripture, they found passages that aptly described who Jesus was for them.  This is one of those scripture readings. (more…)

God’s Gift at Christmas

Matthew 1:1, 17

1 An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham….17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

In between v. 1 and v. 17 are the names of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, going all the way back to the patriarch, Abraham.  There are six groups of seven.  Jesus begins the seventh group.  The number seven was significant in the ancient world.  It represented perfection.  Whenever we read the number seven in the ancient texts, we need to have the concept of perfection in our mind.  Jesus being the start of the seventh group, or truly being the seventh group all on his own, means that he is to be understood as perfection. Hannah’s Faithfulness

1 Samuel 1:23–28

23 Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only — may the LORD establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. 24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the LORD. 27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD has granted me the petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD.” She left him there for the LORD.

Many of the lessons in the daily lectionary for this week are dealing with “childless women.”  How ironic since Mary was pregnant at a very young age and in a very unexpected way.  The above text from 1 Samuel is about Hannah, who gave birth to Samuel.  She is fulfilling her promise to the LORD, the promise she made when she was barren and prayed for a son.  She is going to leave Samuel with Eli, the priest. Jesus as God’s Representative

Galatians 4:8–11

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. 9 Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits? How can you want to be enslaved to them again? 10 You are observing special days, and months, and seasons, and years. 11 I am afraid that my work for you may have been wasted.

“You have come to know God, or rather to be known by God.”  That is the part of this reading that really caught my mind this morning.  It takes me back to seminary and to a way of understanding the impact of Jesus being both human and divine.  My theology professor liked to put it this way:  “Jesus represents us to God, and represents God to us.”  Jesus is the Mediator who can be our advocate with God, and is certainly God’s advocate with us.  Jesus can convey to God what being a human is like, because he lived it.  He can convey to us what God is like because he is God for us.
